The Mighty One – Torch of Rock and Roll

TheMightyOne

Torch of Rock and Roll is a new release from Vancouver-based band, The Mighty One. This is just a solid, no-nonsense hard rock album, with robust guitars, bellowing vocals and an assertive mix. The performances are clean and polished, on par with the kinds of classic metal-adjacent bands you know and love. Perhaps that’s owing to frontman Tim Steinruck’s lengthy, first hand experience in this arena. In any case, these guys have fine-tuned this sound down to an exact science, and it shows. Torch of Rock and Roll offers a plethora of tracks with great songwriting structure, memorable hooks and will leave listeners totally satisfied.

Brian Charles Tischleder – This Town

brian charles cover

This Town is a new full album from artist, Brian Charles Tischleder. The title is a reference to the city of Minneapolis, and the songs are largely themed around the racial strife that engulfed the area last year. There’s quite a lot of variety musically, and all of it good. My favorite track is probably the opening song, All Night Hamburger Stand, which is performed in a 1950s “doo-wop” style. It’s actually phenomenal. Other songs have elements of blues, jazz, and rock’n’roll. Another notable jam is the piano-driven rock song, Marilyn Monroe, which has a kind of classic Bruce Springsteen energy to it. There are a lot of albums out there where people just get on their political soapbox and make their points, but This Town is genuinely creative and a cut above most others.

Ranzel X Kendrick – Foreglow

Foreglow

Foreglow is a new EP from artist, Ranzel X Kendrick. The music could be describes as “roots music” but is pretty much an eclectic blend of a variety of styles like blues, folk etc, It’s an organic, down to Earth sound that’s sincere and sentimental. The vocals steal the show on some of these tracks. On River of Love for example, Ranzel X Kendrick really belts out the lyrics and the listener really can appreciate just how well this artist can sing. His impressive technical vocal abilities are powered by genuine emotional energy. Backed by delicate, folkish guitar melodies, the lyrics convey sentiments that center around romance, yearning, and loneliness. Foreglow demonstrates itself to be a mini-masterpiece. It’s musically enjoyable and captures vital elements of the human experience.

Ranzel X Kendrick – Cross My Heart

Foreglow

Cross My Heart (feat. Rebecca White) is a new single from artist, Ranzel X Kendrick. Combining tropical vibes with a minimalist mix, this sentimental track is performed elegantly. The vocal layering and spacious framework gives the song an ethereal, almost dreamlike quality. This song almost seems like it would work well on a 60’s film soundtrack. It just has that classic singer-songwriter sound but with a trace of stylish, new age mystery. Light guitars and exotic rhythms really make you feel like you’re on an island somewhere, living the life but still dealing with the trials and tribulations of romance. Cross My Heart manages to distinguish itself as unique while also being a standout track within its genre.

Stephh V – Player

stephv

Player is a new single from Sydney Australia-based hip hop artist, Stephh V. This track has one of the smoothest, grooviest backing beats I’ve ever heard. Jazzy and futuristic, the music alone is enough to mesmerize listeners with its ethereal appeal. It really shines.

On the vocal front, Stephh V’s delivery is poetic and rhythmically reflective, which makes sense given her background in writing poetry and dancing from an early age. Her voice is just very pleasant and sonically appealing to listen to. Player combines assertive confidence with soul-searching contemplation. This jam would work well live as a performance art piece. It’s musically satisfying, real and aesthetically unique.

Nikolai Berk – Help Me Forget

HMF Cover Art Final

Help Me Forget is a new single from Los Angeles-based artist, Nikolai Berk. This indie pop/R&B adjacent gem proves itself to be quite sophisticated musically. With its sentimentally aquatic vibes and avant garde intro, the track distinguishes itself right from the get go. The melodically rich backing music is bright and ambient, as colorful synths blend with innocent backing vocals to fill out the mix. The harmonies are very effective musically and capture the sensitivities of Help Me Forget’s underlying romantic themes.

Nikolai Berk is a solid vocalist. His singing style combines attributes of classic lounge singers and contemporary pop. At times his voice comes across as an indie, slightly more artistic variant of someone like Michael Buble’s. There’s a balanced combination of charm, sincerity and technical skill, with a little bit of R&B spice thrown in. You really can’t ask for much more in a pop song than what you get with Help Me Forget. This is that rare chart-worthy track that should have crossover appeal with both mainstream and more “experimentally minded” indie audiences.

Redd Is An Ember – Top Ten

redd

Top Ten is a new single from hip hop artist, Redd Is An Ember. This no-nonsense track is clean, swift and punchy. The synth-driven backing music is mellow and mysterious, allowing the vocals to hit with full force. In what is essentially a monologue of poetic ruminations, Redd Is An Ember’s delivery is absolutely precise, as he impressively oscillates between different speeds with ease and professionalism. His performance is powerful from start to finish. He knows when to dial up the action and when to scale it back, making the song’s climactic points all the more effective. Suffice to say that Top Ten is top-tier indie hip hop.

Push Through is a recent single from Tendy (Rutendo Moyo Mazuru), a singer/songwriter from Zimbabwe who currently lives in Boston, MA. Citing influences like Lauryn Hill, Alanis Morisette, Evanescence, Janis Joplin, the Beatles, and Bob Marley, Tendy’s eclectic style blends elements of various genres. Her songs are characterized by colorfully melodic backing music and vocals that are rich with expressive emotion. She’s actually quite a good singer, and her dynamic, passionate voice ultimately carries the day. There are hints of her gospel roots (both her parents are pastors) in the energy and depth of her performance. The ambiance is upbeat but contains an underlying sensitivity as Tendy sings sincerely about life, love and relationships.
